Meet our 2022 London Marathon Runners

It is one of the biggest fundraising events in the UK, and we are always extremely proud of our London Marathon Runners. Not only are they committing to running26.1miles on Sunday 2nd October, but they also dedicate months of training to be able to do this, all while raising much needed funds for Disability Snowsport UK.

So, in no particular order, we would like to introduce you to our amazing 2022 runners!

Joanna

Hi, I'm Joanna. I was looking for a challenge as I approached a big birthday milestone, so I planned to take on the London Classics - Ride London, Swim the Serpentine and the London Marathon - all in 1 year. I wasn't successful in the marathon public ballot so I started looking for a charity place....

I've always loved the mountains and have been involved in snowsports for as long as I can remember. I started as a recreational skier before moving into ski racing then coaching and instructing. It's so satisfying helping someone gain their confidence out on the snow, and something I think everyone should be able to achieve - which is why I chose to run for DSUK!

I work full time as a junior doctor in the NHS, and fitting in long runs between on-calls has been one of the hardest parts. However, it's been an enjoyable challenge and provided some great sightseeing opportunities on the way. I'm most looking forward to the atmosphere on marathon day - everyone says London has the best crowd support out there.

See you at the finish!

This will be my 2nd Marathon having completed the London 2019 event when I ran for Cardiomyopathy UK. I am 52 years old, married with 3 children and 1 grandson. I have been in the RAF for the past 32 1/2 years, as an Air Traffic Controller.

I never claim to be a Long distance runner having always had a dislike for cross country at school and always preferring 100m races. Despite this, the 2019marathon atmosphere was something else and I have applied every year since. Once again I was unsuccessful this year but my sister-in-law, knowing this, offered me her place when it became clear to her that she was unable to train due to a skiing injury suffered earlier this year.

I started my training back in the middle of May and my body, being 3 years older than last time, has reminded me several times, that I am no spring chicken anymore!!!! I am delighted to be running for Disability Snowsports UK having heard the fantastic work the charity does in striving to provide facilities for people suffering all types of disabilities and injuries.

Well, I wouldn’t call myself an avid runner but during the pandemic, I fell back into running (mainly because it was the only thing you were allowed to do!). I thought I’d challenge myself and last year I signed up for and ran the Brighton Marathon which was my first

and only marathon. It was incredibly tough and I said to myself never again! But, here I am. I saw this opportunity come up to be able to run the London Marathon and had to jump at the chance. But having ran 32km last weekend and another one to do this weekend, I’m starting to remember why I said never again!

Having worked for Crystal for about 4 year snow, I’ve had first-hand insight into the fantastic work DSUK does. Crystal and DSUK have supported each other for many years so it really feels nice to be able to take on this challenge in aid of DSUK to raise some important funds for a charity that is close to everyone’s hearts at Crystal Ski.

From Ski racing back in High School, I became a ski instructor swiftly after I left and absolutely fell in love with it instantly! I continued instructing for a further 4 years on and off whilst also progressing my filmmaking career at the same time. I have had some of the best memories of my life whilst being a ski instructor; from meeting some of my closest friends that were other instructors and shredding the mountains with them after our lessons to learning about the different countries and cultures whilst teaching abroad.

But definitely the most impactful was working with all the kids, able-bodied and disabled. Seeing them at the start of the week having never put on a ski, to the end where we could all ski the mountain together and have fun. Seeing the passion and happiness that were created for them has to be some of the most fulfilling moments in my life and I cherish the memories still.

The reason why I'm so happy to be fundraising for DSUK via the challenge of the London Marathon is because I know from personal experience the impact and positive effect that these sports can have. I want to try and do as much as I can to help ensure people can experience that too! It changed my life for the better so I hope it can do the same for others!

I have come to know DSUK through working with them at Crystal Ski Holidays. I was lucky enough to experience a DSUK trip to Andorra which really opened my eyes to the joy these can bring. I’ll never forget the smiles as people came down the slopes. Hopefully the money raised can help send people to the mountains in the future.

Training has been tough this year, perhaps a combination of heat-wave and age, having last done the London Marathon in 2003! Just itching to go now and also raising a last few pounds for DSUK will keep me going!

Make sure you keep an eye out for this in the red DSUK running vests!
