Back in the 1970’s one of our founders David Morris asked, “Why shouldn’t a wheelchair be on top of a mountain?”. Every year since then DSUK has used the unique power of snowsport to bring physical and mental health benefits to disabled people, that was until Covid19 changed the world. 2020 was the first year in our history where we have been unable to deliver snowsport lessons. We’re determined that it will be the last.
To help us bring some of our activities online, and return to the slopes as soon as possible, we are launching our Race to the Top challenge! Unlike other virtual challenges, we will focus on elevation.
You will use a fitness app/smartphone to record your elevation and try to reach your chosen peak. To help track participants performance we have set up a Challenge Hound group for each challenge and the instructions on how to join and sync your fitness app will be sent with your registration confirmation email. This will show a leaderboard and have all your challenge data in one place.
You can choose from Mount Everest, Mont Blanc, and Ben Nevis and enter as an individual or in a team.
To enter as an individual
You have two options to enter as an individual:
1. Push yourself to reach the height of Ben Nevis (4,406ft) (Ben Nevis Individual Challenge option on form) or Blanc Mont (15,771ft) (Mont Blanc Individual Challenge option on form) by the end of March.
2. Choose to join DSUK’s open team and have your elevation added to the combined total of all participants to reach the height of Mount Everest (30,000ft) (Everest Open Team Challenge option on form) by the end of March
Alternatively if you wish to create a team of your own, you can choose the Team Everest Challenge (Create your own Team) option on the form. The team leader can choose to register all participants or send the team name for members to sign up individually. A separate email from the confirmation, will be sent with a unique Challenge Hound code for the team to sign up with.
Entry for the event is free, however we encourage participants to ask for sponsorship or donates to help us to continue to fund adaptive snowsport experiences when we are able to do so. The challenge Just Giving page can be found via the link.
